This open ring was made by us from the hand piece of a sterling silver „Repousse“ fork from 1933. Produced by "Manchester CO" from Providence, Rhode Island, USA, this series was named "Southern Rose".
The highly ornate pattern on this ring represent Roses which are a symbol for love and passion.
Repousse is an ancient metal-working technique whereby patterns are created by hammering, embossing or pressing from the reverse side. The result is a raised relief pattern on the front of the object. The word’s origin is French from the term meaning “to push back”.
In the 3rd century BC, the Greeks used repousse to embellish their bronze breast-plate armour. The Egyptians created death masks from gold repousse inlaid with semi-precious stones.
The repousse technique became very popular with mid-19th century American silver makers.
